RSA NSW Knowledge Base
Here is everything you need to know about RSA in NSW. Learn what the course covers, what to bring, how to book and what happens after you pass, including your interim certificate and competency card.
What Is RSA and Who Needs It in NSW?
Responsible Service of Alcohol training prepares you to sell, serve or supply alcohol responsibly in NSW. It applies to roles such as bar and restaurant service, retail liquor sales and other duties involving alcohol. Some security, promotional and volunteer roles also require RSA.
The NSW course includes SITHFAB021 – Provide responsible service of alcohol and NSW-specific requirements. Read more here…

What the NSW RSA Course Covers
You learn about NSW liquor laws, checking ID, preventing underage drinking, recognising intoxication and refusing service. Training also covers harm minimisation and responding to difficult situations. Your trainer uses practical examples and assessment activities to help you apply responsible-service skills at work.
Download the RSA learner guide for further course information.

NSW Course Requirements: ID, USI and Eligibility
Bring the identification listed in your booking confirmation and have your Unique Student Identifier ready. Your enrolment details should match your ID. If you do not have a USI, create one for free before training.
Check with HCA before booking if you are under 18, have visa-related eligibility questions or are unsure which documents to bring. Training eligibility and permission to perform particular work duties are separate requirements.

Course Duration, Price and Delivery
HCA’s NSW RSA course is delivered face-to-face in Sydney CBD over one day. Prices start from $150, including the NSW competency card fee. Course materials are provided. Check the calendar for your selected session’s current price, venue and start and finish times, and be available for the full training and assessment.

Your Interim Certificate and Competency Card
After passing the final assessment, you receive a Statement of Attainment and NSW RSA interim certificate. The interim certificate is valid for 90 days.
Before it expires, you must apply for your competency card in person at Service NSW with your interim certificate and the required original ID documents for the 100-point check. Your details must match your ID. See the card application steps, including access to a digital card.

How Long Does NSW RSA Last?
Your NSW competency card is valid for five years. Check the expiry shown on your card and complete the required Liquor & Gaming NSW refresher process to keep your RSA endorsement current. Keep your contact details up to date so you receive renewal reminders.
If your card has expired, check the regulator’s instructions before booking a new course. Read the official competency-card and renewal guidance.

Already Have an Interstate RSA?
If you already hold an interstate RSA qualification, you may be eligible for a NSW bridging pathway instead of the full course. The rules depend on where you live, your job duties, where you trained and how recent your qualification is. Temporary interstate workers and people moving permanently to NSW can have different requirements.
Check the official NSW bridging and interstate guidance before enrolling.

RSA NSW Frequently Asked Questions
Who needs an RSA certificate in NSW?
RSA training is required for people whose duties include selling, serving or supplying alcohol in NSW. This includes bar and restaurant staff and retail liquor workers, as well as relevant security, promotional and volunteer roles. Check the requirements for your particular duties; some roles need additional training.
Is HCA’s NSW RSA course online?
The HCA course advertised on this page is face-to-face. NSW also permits online RSA training through providers approved for that delivery method. An online RSA course intended for another state is not automatically valid in NSW. Check the official NSW RSA guidance.
How old do I need to be to join an RSA NSW course?
HCA accepts NSW RSA enrolments from age 16. Training eligibility is different from permission to perform alcohol-service duties: you need to be 18 to sell, serve or supply alcohol in NSW. Contact HCA before booking if you are under 18 or have questions about your circumstances.
What identification do I need to bring?
Follow your booking confirmation: HCA asks students to bring 100 points of original ID, including photo identification, for training. Make sure your enrolment name matches your documents. Contact HCA before the course if you do not have enough ID or need an alternative arrangement confirmed.
For your competency-card application, Service NSW requires your interim certificate and 100 points of acceptable original ID. Use the document checklist on the back of your interim certificate and confirm any alternative arrangements directly with Service NSW.
Do I need a USI?
You need a Unique Student Identifier before a Statement of Attainment can be issued for nationally recognised training, unless a valid exemption applies. Use your existing USI if you have one and check that your personal details match your enrolment. Find or create your USI.
What should I bring on training day?
Bring your required ID, USI and booking confirmation, and arrive before the session begins. Wear comfortable clothing; no special equipment is required and course materials are supplied. Be available for the full training and assessment session.
Can I use my NSW RSA in another state?
Yes, mostly. Your NSW RSA is based on the same nationally recognised unit (SITHFAB021) used across Australia, so QLD, SA, WA, TAS, ACT and NT generally accept it, sometimes with a quick registration step.
Victoria is the one exception, it requires its own bridging module regardless of where you trained. Check with the destination state’s liquor licensing regulator before you start work.
What happens if I do not pass the assessment?
HCA provides an opportunity to attempt the assessment again if you do not pass the first time. Your trainer will explain the next steps and any further training needed. Certification is issued only after successful completion.
What English, literacy and numeracy skills do I need?
You need to read course instructions, complete forms and short written answers, communicate with the trainer, follow spoken instructions and understand basic times and quantities used in alcohol service.
If you need learning support or are unsure whether your English is suitable, contact HCA before booking. The team can discuss support and reasonable adjustments while ensuring the course requirements can be met. Email admin@hca.edu.au or call 1300 601 691.
