Food Safety Supervisor Knowledge Base
Learn about the Food Safety Supervisor role, the units covered by the course and the certification requirements to check for your business.
What Is a Food Safety Supervisor?
A Food Safety Supervisor supports safe food handling and helps staff follow the business’s food safety procedures. The role involves recognising hazards, explaining controls and supervising day-to-day practices. It is a practical responsibility within the business, not simply a certificate to display.

Who Is This Course For?
The course is relevant to chefs, kitchen managers, café owners, catering supervisors and others who oversee food handling. It is intended for people taking on food safety responsibilities in hospitality settings. Check the requirements for your industry and location before enrolling, especially if your business operates in a different sector.

What Units Does the Course Cover?
HCA’s course covers SITXFSA005 – Use hygienic practices for food safety and SITXFSA006 – Participate in safe food handling practices. You will need to demonstrate the required knowledge and practical skills for both units. Successful assessment leads to a Statement of Attainment for the units completed.

When Does a Business Need a Supervisor?
Standard 3.2.2A requires covered category one and category two food businesses to appoint a certified Food Safety Supervisor who is reasonably available to advise and supervise handlers. The certificate must have been obtained within the past five years. Check the FSANZ requirements and your local regulator’s guidance for your business.

What You Will Learn
Training covers food hygiene, contamination risks and safe practices when receiving, storing, preparing and serving food. You will learn to follow food safety procedures, monitor controls and take action when food may be unsafe. Your trainer will explain how the assessment relates to the tasks performed in a food business.

Food safety training involves reading instructions, communicating with others and working with information such as times and temperatures. Contact HCA before enrolling if you need help with eligibility, learning support or reasonable adjustments.

Certification, Renewal and Interstate Use
The national units form part of your training record, but Food Safety Supervisor recognition can involve additional state or sector requirements. Check with the food regulator where your business operates before relying on interstate training. For businesses covered by Standard 3.2.2A, supervisor certification must be current within the required five-year period.
