RSG & RCG Knowledge Base
Understand responsible gambling training in Australia, from choosing your course to preparing for assessment and checking the requirements where you work.
What Are RSG and RCG?
RSG stands for Responsible Service of Gambling. In NSW, the training is called Responsible Conduct of Gambling, or RCG. Both focus on reducing gambling harm and helping staff carry out gaming duties responsibly.
HCA’s course covers SITHGAM022 – Provide responsible gambling services. The national unit and state requirements should be considered together when choosing your course.

Who Needs Responsible Gambling Training?
This training is relevant to people working with gaming services in pubs, clubs, hotels, casinos and other licensed venues. Roles can include gaming attendants, dealers, cashiers and supervisors.
The training you need depends on your duties and local rules. Check with your employer and the relevant gaming regulator before starting a role.

What You Will Learn
Learn to recognise signs of gambling harm, communicate sensitively with customers and follow your venue’s responsible gambling procedures. Training covers legal responsibilities, information and support services, exclusion processes and responding to difficult situations. Practical examples help you apply the learning to day-to-day work in a gaming venue.

Working Across Australia
A nationally recognised unit is not a guarantee that you can work in every state without further training. Gambling rules, approved courses and renewal requirements vary. Before moving interstate, check the relevant gaming authority’s requirements for your role and existing qualification.

Classroom Training and Assessment
Our NSW classroom training takes one day. NSW also requires the Liquor & Gaming online RCG assessment after the course, before an interim certificate can be issued. See the official NSW RCG process. Check your confirmation for session times and attend the full training.

Course Cost and Inclusions
NSW RCG courses start at $150, including the competency card fee and course materials. Check your selected date for the current price and availability. If you also need responsible alcohol service training, explore our RSA and RCG combo course and check both session dates before booking.

Entry Requirements, Identification and USI
Check the age and eligibility requirements on your selected state course page before enrolling. Bring valid photo ID and the documents requested in your confirmation. Have your USI ready for nationally recognised certification. Our team can help with enrolment questions or learning support before training day.

Certificates, Cards and Renewal
Once you pass, you’ll get a Statement of Attainment for the unit. NSW students also need to complete Liquor & Gaming NSW’s online assessment before their RCG interim certificate is issued. If you don’t already have a NSW competency card, you’ll apply through Service NSW, which includes an identity check. Keep track of your renewal dates too, check with the regulator on when yours is due.

RSG & RCG Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between RSG and RCG?
RSG means Responsible Service of Gambling; NSW uses the term Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG).
The subject is responsible gambling, but state training, assessment and certification requirements are not identical. Choose a course suitable for the state where you intend to work.
Who needs an RSG or RCG certificate?
People whose duties involve gaming services may need responsible gambling training. This includes many gaming attendants, dealers, cashiers and supervisors. Confirm the requirement for your role with your employer and the relevant state regulator.
What ID do I need to bring with me?
Bring valid photo ID, such as a driver’s licence or passport, and the documents listed in your booking confirmation. Have your Unique Student Identifier ready. You can create a USI free.
A first NSW competency card application involves a separate identity check at Service NSW. Follow the current instructions provided with your interim certificate.
What do I need on training day?
Bring your required ID and enrolment details. Wear comfortable clothing and allow enough time to arrive before the session starts. Course materials are provided; check your confirmation for any additional instructions.
How long does the RSG or RCG course take?
Our NSW classroom course takes one day. You must also complete the separate Liquor & Gaming NSW online RCG assessment. Course requirements in other states can differ.
How long does my certificate last?
Renewal and refresher requirements depend on the state and type of competency. Check the expiry on your card or certificate and the relevant regulator’s instructions before relying on an older qualification.
Can I use my RSG or RCG in another state?
Not always. NSW is the exception, its RCG only works in NSW, and NSW won’t accept an RSG from anywhere else either.
Outside NSW, most states (QLD, WA, NT, SA, TAS) use RSG and generally recognise each other’s, so one RSG usually covers you across those states. Moving to or from NSW means redoing the local course.
What if I fail the assessment?
If you don’t pass the assessment on your first attempt, you’ll have the opportunity to redo it. Our trainers are there to support you throughout the day, so if you’re struggling with any part of the material, please tell us and ask for help.
We want you to walk out with your certificate, and we’ll do what we can to make sure you’re set up to pass.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements
You need enough English to read course materials, follow instructions, take part in discussions and complete written assessments, along with basic numeracy. Contact HCA before booking if you need learning support or reasonable adjustments.
