Who Can Do the RCG Course in NSW
Almost everyone can. As long as you meet the minimum vocational age requirement and bring valid photo ID on the day, you’re good to go. It doesn’t matter if you’re an Australian citizen, a visa holder, or brand new to Australia. If you’re unsure about anything, get in touch with our customer service team.
You must be 16 or older to enrol in an RCG course in New South Wales. You must be at least 18 years old to legally work in a licensed gaming venue in NSW.
You must bring a photo ID on training day. Documents can include a licence, passport, etc. You also need a USI number, which is free and you can get it online.
You'll receive your Statement of Attainment on the same day. You then need to pass an online assessment and visit a service centre to receive your RCG NSW Card.

FAQ About the RCG Training in NSW
Who needs an RCG certificate in NSW?
If you work in any role that involves gaming machines at a licensed venue in NSW, you legally need an RCG certificate. That covers a wide range of jobs across the gaming and hospitality industry.
Gaming attendants, gaming supervisors, casino dealers, TAB operators, and club receptionists working in gaming areas all need one. So do cashiers in gaming venues, gaming managers, and anyone in a licensee or directorial role at a venue with poker machines or other gambling facilities.
Basically, if gambling is part of your job in any way, you need it.
Is the RCG online?
The RCG in NSW can be done face-to-face or via a live virtual classroom with other providers. There’s no fully self-paced online option in NSW. You need to attend a live session either way. HCA only offers face-to-face training, which gives you direct access to a qualified trainer and hands-on practice throughout the day.
What ID do I need to take to the training?
You need to bring a valid government-issued photo ID on the day, such as a driver’s licence, passport, or proof of age card. You’ll also need your USI. If you don’t have one yet, head to usi.gov.au and it takes a few minutes to set up.
What do I need to bring with me on training day?
Bringing the correct ID is essential. It’s one of the most important requirements on the day. Please review our ID Requirements section above before attending to make sure you have the right documents.
Other than that, just bring yourself. There’s no need for any special clothing or equipment, just wear something comfortable. All course materials are provided at the venue.
How long does the RCG course take?
The RCG course in NSW runs for 6 hours and is completed in a single day. It covers everything you need to know about responsible gambling services, including gaming machine laws, how to identify problem gambling, your legal obligations, and how to handle difficult situations on the floor. It’s a full day of training, so make sure you’re free for the entire session.
How long does my NSW RCG certificate last?
Your RCG competency card is valid for 5 years. Once you complete the course and pass the Liquor & Gaming NSW online assessment, you’ll receive an interim certificate that lets you start working straight away for up to 90 days. You then visit a Service NSW centre with 100 points of ID to apply for your photo competency card, which arrives in the mail within a few weeks.
When your card is close to expiring, Liquor & Gaming NSW will notify you. You can renew it by completing the online RCG refresher course.
Can I use my NSW RCG to work in other states?
No. The RCG is a NSW-specific qualification and isn’t recognised in other states. If you move interstate, you’ll need to complete the relevant RSG course in your new state.
The same applies in reverse. An RSG from another state won’t be accepted in NSW.
Is this course approved by Liquor & Gaming NSW?
Yes. HCA is an accredited Registered Training Organisation (RTO) approved by Liquor & Gaming NSW to deliver the RCG course. The training and certification we provide fully meets NSW legal requirements. When you complete your course with us, you’ll receive an official Statement of Attainment recognised by licensed gaming venues across New South Wales.
What if I fail the assessment?
If you don’t pass the assessment on your first attempt, you’ll have the opportunity to redo it. Our trainers are there to support you throughout the day, so if you’re struggling with any part of the material, please tell us and ask for help.
We want you to walk out with your certificate, and we’ll do what we can to make sure you’re set up to pass.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements
To successfully complete the RCG course in NSW (SITHGAM022 – Provide Responsible Gambling Services), all students must have a basic level of English language, literacy and numeracy. This ensures you can understand the course content and fully participate in training.
You must be able to:
Read and understand written course materials, instructions, and short texts
Write basic information, such as completing forms and short written answers
Communicate clearly in English with the trainer and other participants
Follow verbal instructions during activities and assessments
