FAQ About the RSA Training in QLD
Who needs an RSA certificate in QLD?
If you work in any role that involves selling, serving, or supplying alcohol in QLD, you legally need an RSA certificate. That covers a wide range of jobs across the hospitality and events industry.
Bartenders, wait staff, bottle shop attendants, and bar managers all need one. So do security staff working at licensed venues, alcohol delivery drivers, event staff serving drinks, hotel and motel staff, club workers, and anyone in a management or licensee role at a licensed venue.
Basically, if alcohol is part of your job in any way, you need it.
Is the RSA online?
Both face-to-face and online RSA courses are accepted in QLD, although our RSA QLD training is face-to-face only. Unlike online RSA courses, our in-person training gives you hands-on practice and direct access to a qualified trainer throughout the day.
What ID do I need to take to the training?
You need to bring a valid government-issued photo ID on the day, such as a driver’s licence, passport, or proof of age card. You’ll also need your USI. If you don’t have one yet, head to usi.gov.au and it takes a few minutes to set up.
What do I need to bring with me on training day?
Bringing the correct ID is essential. It’s one of the most important requirements on the day. Please review our ID Requirements section above before attending to ensure you have the right documents.
Other than that, just bring yourself and a positive attitude. There’s no need for any special clothing or equipment, just wear something comfortable. All course materials are provided at the venue.
Once you finish, you’ll walk away with your official QLD RSA certificate, which lets you start working in any licensed venue straight away.
How long does the RSA course take?
The RSA course in QLD runs for 6 hours and is completed in a single day. The day covers everything you need to know about responsible alcohol service, including legal requirements, harm minimisation, and how to handle difficult situations. It’s a full day of training, so make sure you’re free for the entire session.
How long does my QLD RSA certificate last?
Your QLD RSA certificate doesn’t expire. Once you complete the course, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment which is your official proof of certification.
There’s no separate competency card, no interim certificate, and no renewal process. Queensland is one of the simpler states in that regard. You do the course once and you’re done.
Can I use my QLD RSA to work in other states?
Yes, in most cases. The course is based on the national unit of competency SITHFAB021, which is recognised across Australia. However, two states have additional requirements. NSW requires you to complete a full NSW RSA course with a live instructor, and VIC requires you to complete a free bridging module through Liquor Control Victoria (LCV) before you can work there. All other states and territories accept your QLD certificate without any extra steps.
Is this course approved by Liquor And Gaming Regulation QLD?
Yes. HCA is an accredited Registered Training Organisation (RTO) approved by Liquor And Gaming Regulation QLD to deliver the RSA course.
This means the training and certification we provide fully meets QLD legal requirements. When you complete your course with us, you’ll receive an official QLD interim certificate that’s recognised by all licensed venues across the state.
What if I fail the assessment?
If you don’t pass the assessment on your first attempt, you’ll have the opportunity to redo it. Our trainers are there to support you throughout the day, so if you’re struggling with any part of the material, please tell us and ask for help.
We want you to walk out with your certificate, and we’ll do what we can to make sure you’re set up to pass.
