FAQ About HCA Courses in Parramatta
Who needs a certificate from HCA?
Anyone working in hospitality, gaming, or food service in New South Wales. If you serve alcohol at a licensed venue, you need your RSA. If you work on a gaming floor, you need your RCG.
And if you handle or prepare food commercially, you need a Food Handler or Food Safety Supervisor certificate. These aren’t optional, they’re legal requirements for working in these industries across Australia.
What ID do I need to bring with me?
Just a valid photo ID on the day like a driver’s licence or passport works fine. You’ll also need a USI (Unique Student Identifier) to receive your certificate. If you don’t have one yet, you can get it for free at usi.gov.au in a couple of minutes.
What do I need to bring with me on training day?
Your ID is the most important thing, so make sure you have it sorted before the day. Other than that, just wear something comfortable. All course materials are provided at the venue. Once you complete the course, you’ll walk away with your certificate.
How long do training sessions take?
It depends on the course. RSA and RCG courses are typically completed within a few hours. Food Handler and Food Safety Supervisor courses run as a full training day. Either way, you’ll be in and out with your certificate the same day you attend.
Keep in mind that for RSA and RCG, you’ll need to visit a Service SA centre after completing the course to get your physical card.
How long do certificates last?
That depends on which course you do. RSA and RCG certificates are valid for 5 years in New South Wales. Your Food Safety Supervisor certificate is valid for 5 years.
And your Food Handler certificate doesn’t expire, once you’ve got it, it’s yours for life.
Can I use my certificate in other states?
In most cases, yes. All our courses are based on nationally recognised units, so your certificate is accepted across Australia. That said, some states have their own additional requirements. NSW in particular has extra rules through the NSW Food Authority and NSW Liquor & Gaming. If you’re planning to work interstate, it’s worth checking the requirements for that state before you book.
What if I fail the assessment?
If you don’t pass the assessment on your first attempt, you’ll have the opportunity to redo it. Our trainers are there to support you throughout the day, so if you’re struggling with any part of the material, please tell us and ask for help.
We want you to walk out with your certificate, and we’ll do what we can to make sure you’re set up to pass.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements
To successfully complete the course, all students must have a basic level of English language, literacy and numeracy. This ensures you can understand the course content and fully participate in training.
You must be able to:
- Read and understand written course materials, instructions, and short texts
- Write basic information, such as completing forms and short written answers
- Communicate clearly in English with the trainer and other participants
- Follow verbal instructions during activities and assessments
- Understand simple numeracy, such as reading times and quantities
If English is your second language, you must have a level of English that allows you to fully participate in the course. If you are unsure, please contact us and we can help assess whether this course is suitable for you.
If you require LLN assistance, please let us know before booking. We may be able to offer support, make reasonable adjustments, or recommend alternative options.
