What is the Difference Between RSG and RCG Certificates?
The RSG and the RCG are the same certificate, they just have different names based on the location. NSW calls it the RCG (Responsible Conduct of Gambling). Every other state calls it the RSG (Responsible Service of Gambling). The training, the content, and what you learn are identical. It’s purely a state-level naming difference.
Whichever one you end up with, the goal is the same: you’ll know how to identify problem gambling, follow your state’s laws, and handle gaming responsibilities properly in a licensed venue.
The one element to keep in mind is that these certificates aren’t interchangeable across state lines. An RCG from NSW won’t be recognised in other states, and an RSG from elsewhere won’t be recognised in NSW. If you relocate, you’ll need to do the course again in your new state.

FAQ About the RSG and RCG Training
Who needs an RSG or RCG certificate?
If you work in any role that involves gambling services at a licensed venue in Australia, you legally need an RSG or RCG certificate. That covers a wide range of jobs across the gaming industry.
Gaming attendants, gaming supervisors, casino dealers, TAB operators, and club receptionists working in gaming areas all need one. So do cashiers in gaming venues, gaming managers, and anyone in a licensee role at a venue with poker machines or other gambling facilities.
Basically, if gambling is part of your job in any way, you need it.
What ID do I need to bring with me?
It depends on which state you’re in, though the requirements are pretty straightforward across the board.
For most states (VIC, QLD, WA, SA, NT, ACT, and TAS), you just need a valid photo ID on the day. A driver’s licence or passport works fine.
In NSW, the RCG is a face-to-face course and you’ll need to bring valid photo ID as well. No 100-point check required like the RSA.
You’ll also need a USI (Unique Student Identifier) to receive your certificate regardless of where you are. You can get one for free at usi.gov.au in a couple of minutes if you don’t have one already.
What do I need to bring with me on training day?
Bringing the correct ID is essential. It’s one of the most important requirements on the day. Please review our ID requirements before attending to make sure you have the right documents.
Other than that, just bring yourself. There’s no special clothing or equipment needed, just wear something comfortable. All course materials are provided at the venue.
Once you finish, you’ll walk away with your official RSG or RCG certificate, ready to start working in a licensed gaming venue straight away.
How long does the RSG or RCG course take?
The course is completed in a single day. It covers everything you need to know about responsible gambling services, including how to identify problem gambling, your legal obligations, and how to handle difficult situations on the floor. Make sure you’re free for the full session.
How long does my RSG certificate last?
It depends on which state you’re in. In NSW, your RCG competency card is valid for 5 years. After that, you’ll need to renew it through Liquor & Gaming NSW to keep working legally.
In Victoria, your certificate is valid for 3 years and you’ll need to complete a refresher course to renew it.
In Queensland, WA, South Australia, and Tasmania, your certificate doesn’t expire once you have it.
In the ACT and Northern Territory, you’ll need to renew every 3 years.
Can I use my RSG or RCG to work in other states?
Not always. Unlike some other nationally recognised courses, the RSG and RCG don’t transfer freely across state lines.
The RSG is recognised across QLD, WA, NT, SA, and TAS. If you hold an RSG from one of those states, you can generally work in the others without any issues.
NSW is a different story. The RCG is only valid in NSW, and NSW won’t accept an RSG from another state. If you move to New South Wales, you’ll need to do the RCG course locally. The same applies in reverse. Your NSW RCG won’t be recognised elsewhere.
Victoria also has its own requirements, so it’s worth checking with the relevant state authority before making any moves.
What if I fail the assessment?
If you don’t pass the assessment on your first attempt, you’ll have the opportunity to redo it. Our trainers are there to support you throughout the day, so if you’re struggling with any part of the material, please tell us and ask for help.
We want you to walk out with your certificate, and we’ll do what we can to make sure you’re set up to pass.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements
To complete the RSG or RCG course, you need a basic level of English. This means being able to read and understand course materials, follow verbal instructions from the trainer, communicate clearly during the session, and write basic answers in assessments.
If English is your second language, you just need enough to fully participate in the training. If you’re not sure whether your level is sufficient, get in touch before booking and we can help figure out if the course is the right fit.
If you need any LLN support or adjustments, let us know ahead of time and we’ll do our best to help.
